This Beach party idea is a little extra special as it’s was for my little boy

We created a Beach/Pool party for his 1st birthday party and it was lots of fun.

I laminated printed surfboards for cupcake toppers and used shoe key rings and shark fins also.

Guests were able to keep the shoe key ring if they wanted to and every child got a beach bucket and towel to take home.

A beach party would not be complete without a sand pit and giant beach ball (ebay) so we added those too.

This Mermaid Birthday Party is another one of my own setups. My daughter wanted an Ariel party but I didn’t want an over the top Disney party so we met here in the middle.

Everything was DIY. From the mermaid skirts and seashell hairpiece  to the treasure chest (old shipping trunk) and even the jelly fish hanging from the ceiling were made from plastic bowls and plastic bags.

There were two cakes. One was  Ariel and the other a Coral cake which was made from Donut holes covered in homemade toffee.

This Lemonade is from Frogandthemouse.com from her recent baby shower blog post You Are My Sunshine which was adorable and yellow and flowery and yellow and sunshiney and smiles and smiles. Just Loved it!

1 cup Countrytime Lemonade mix {or the likes}
2 cups cold water
1 can of chilled pineapple juice {46 oz}
2 cans chilled Sprite {or the likes}

Mix together and add lemon slices to make pretty … FIN.

Most of us want to give our kids the best for their Birthdays and an OTT (Over The Top) Birthday cake has suddenly become the normal requirement.

Even if I could afford to buy a 4 tier OTT  $800 cake for my child’s first birthday does it really mean I want to ?

Heck NO !

I can think of many other things to spend the money on including a good bottle of  wine that I will need to drink after the 20+ kids run riot through my house.

So why not fake it and fool everyone that you are indeed a “time savvy organized rich mother “.

I must admit faking cakes is nothing new to me, many times I have had to put a fake base on a homemade creation just so it doesn’t topple over but that was more out of necessity them affordability.

So what about the real cake? Well you have 2 options – make 1 tier real (make sure you cut from this tier) or take the cake back into the kitchen and serve up a sheet cake.  Everyone will be none the wiser.

IMPORTANT  TIP: If your fake cake is colored e.g, blue, make sure the real cake that you a slicing from also has a sheet of the same icing otherwise your cover will be blown.

Puff pastry is one of the staples in my freezer. It can be used for just about anything savory or sweet. Puff pastry should be in your freezer for moment like these.

Basically if it tastes good together then you can wrap it in puff pastry.

Cheddar Cheese Puffs – simple dressed up squares of puff pastry, just add a topping.

Cheese Straws - Use a good quality strong vintage cheese to step this up a notch.

Sweet Fruit mince swirls served with a sherry and ice cream.

Pear and Blue Cheese Cups - Make your own cups by adding puff pastry squares to a muffin tin and pricking with a fork then blind baking or use bread for the cup base.

Cinnamon Scrolls, sugar and cinnamon spread out over a sheet of puff pastry that you have coated in melted butter. Roll into scroll and freeze ready to pull out in an emergency. Bake until golden.

Sundried tomatoes and grated cheese puffs

Camembert cheese round wrapped in a sheet of puff pastry and served with crackers and some fig paste.

I love bamboo disposable food plates. Bamboo is the “acceptable” paper plate for rich people. I love any excuse to be lazy, and this is a great one. These plain Bamboo plates have been taken to the next level with a little food color. Love this!

Sometimes the best party ideas are actually the simplest. I am not sure how everyone feels about using a kids toy (water bomb balloons) and vodka in the same bowl, but I think it sits OK with me.  Asubtlerevelry.com shares this fun idea for a fun Summer Party Hack  simply freeze water into balloons to use for ice. Obviously you could switch out the vodka for soft drink or soda.  Perfect idea for a summer pool party or even a Rainbow party.  Image source

This post brings back sad memories.

The sound of my drink fountain smashing to the floor as my husband picked it up to throw water on two tweens who had him under attack in a water fight.

The only thing that remains is the stand, lonely and isolated in the back of my cupboard. I wish I had made something like this to keep is safe and secure.

My children have never really been into Lego, but I can certainly see why so many kids love the stuff. It is great for all ages levels and its imaginative and colorful. I think more adults should play with Lego and maybe the world would be a better place. (Note: Lego will not change the world,but it sounded good)

Popcorn is one of those things that once you start eating it you can’t stop. My solution was always to never have it, but since my kids have come along , going to the movies just is not the same if we don’t get a box of this popping good tasting stuff.  Popcorn for parties is a great tummy filler for little kids and if you simply air pop it then it’s actually pretty healthy too. (Shh don’t tell me kids that)
